Travel Tales: Akron to LA 2014 - Day 5

Early in the morning we headed north on US 191 from Moab to Interstate 70 where we would travel west for a few exits. We went south on 24 to Capitol Reef National Park. This was our third park of Utah's Majestic Five or Utah's High Five. These names are given to the five national parks of southern Utah. After spending some time in that park, we drove south on Scenic Byway 12. We will always remember that road. Although the scenery was beautiful, we found sections of the road scary to drive.

The road reached an elevation of 9600 feet for a mountain in the Dixie National Forest. When we came down from the mountain, we found we had to go over rocky terrain. At one point we had to travel over a section of the road that was just the road itself. No guard rails or shoulder were on either side - just the drop-off. We just stayed in the middle of the road and prayed no RV would be coming up the mountain. Even though the road was challenging, the scenery was amazing.

We arrived at Bryce Canyon National Park and were able to check in early to the hotel just outside the park. Bryce is one of my favorite national parks and we agreed it looks like a fairyland from some viewpoints. I have been to this park four times and I love it every time I visit. The red and beige rocks of Utah are here, but the added splash of the green from the pine trees makes this a colorful place to explore.

In the summer Bryce is a very hot place to hike. One summer when I was hiking, I had to be rescued because I became severely dehydrated. That was not the case in November. We hiked around the edge of the canyon through the snow and were able to visit all the viewpoints we wanted to see. Windy conditions brought the temperature even lower and we were freezing. We planned to hike into the canyon the next morning.
