National Lands: Ohio

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is between Akron and Cleveland, Ohio. The Valley is east of Interstate 77. Interstate 271 cuts through the valley and travels to the east of the park. Remnants of the Ohio & Erie Canal are located in the park. The Cuyahoga River runs through the area which has forest, marshes and farm lands. Trails are available for hiking and biking. Peninsula is a good spot to start a visit. The Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is in Xenia is to the southeast of Dayton. The closest interstate is Interstate 675. This monument provides information on the life of Charles Young and also on the Buffalo soldiers of the U.S.Army. In Beachwood outside Cleveland is the David Berger National Memorial which honors one of the Israeli athletes killed at the 1972 Olympics. Interstate 271 is near the area. Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial is in Put-in-Bay on Kelly's Island in Lake Erie. Interstate 80/90 is to the south of the area. The memorial honors the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812.

Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Fort Miamis National Historic Site is in Toledo. Interstate 475 is just east of the site. The First Ladies National Historic Site is located in Canton which is south of Akron. Interstate 77 is to the west of this site which honors the works of the First Ladies of this nation. In Mentor, which is to the northeast of Cleveland, is the James A. Garfield National Historic Site. Interstate 90 runs through Mentor. The site commemorates the life of President Garfield whose home is featured. The William Howard Taft National Historic Site honors another Ohio President. Taft's former home is just north of the Ohio River between Interstates 75 and 71.

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in Dayton celebrates the achievements of Wilbur and Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar. The park is west of Interstate 675 and south of Interstate 70 near Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Also in Dayton is the National Aviation Heritage Area which has multiple locations in the vicinity. Visitors should check the National Aviation site for more information. East of Cincinnati and south of Columbus is Chillicothe where the Hopewell Culture National  Historical Park is located. Interstate 71 will get travelers near the area. This park contains Indian burial mounds. The North Country National Scenic Trail runs through seven states. In Ohio the trail runs along the eastern, southern and western sides of the state. In some areas it follows the Buckeye Trail.
