The Lincoln Home National Historical Site is located in Springfield, Illinois. Interstate 55 runs north to south through the city and Interstate 72 travels east to west. Springfield is in the center of Illinois. This site is very busy during the summer season. Visitors can tour the Lincoln home and its neighborhood. The Pullman National Monument is located in Chicago with Interstate 94 providing close access to the area. A variety of sites are included in this new National Monument. These include The National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, Historic Pullman Foundation and West Pullman Park.

The Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail travels through eleven states. This trail is over 3,700 miles long and has visitor centers in each state. In Illinois the center is in the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site. This center is located in Hartford which is along the Missouri River just north of Interstate 270. Covering five states is the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail. The trail begins its 1,300 journey in Nauvoo which is on the Mississippi River south of Burlington and Fort Madison. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the relocation of the Cherokee people from Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee to Oklahoma. The trail runs east to west across the southern tip of the state.
