The Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. The park is in the northeast corner of the state next to the Mississippi River. No interstate is near the area. The site has over 200 American Indian mounds which are considered sacred burial places. No auto tours are permitted out of respect for the burial area. Walking around the grounds is permitted. Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is located to the east of Iowa City and just south of Interstate 80. The park contains the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, his gravesite and birthplace.

The Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail travels through eleven states. In Iowa the trail runs along the western edge of the state. The Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail covers five states. The trail runs along the southern section of the with Interstate 80 traveling north of it.
